When should the test be performed?

The greatest indication for the examination is the acute course of the disease, including the presence of blood or mucus in the stool. The most common symptoms of ongoing infection with these pathogens include:

  • Nausea, vomiting,
  • Profuse diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain and fever
  • Malaise, a feeling of breakdown.

How does infection occur?

Infection with bacteria occurs through the ingestion as a result of eating contaminated food (undercooked meat, unpasteurized milk or raw eggs). Exceptions in the handling and storage of food raw materials play an important role in the ethology of disease development. Consequently, the risk of recontamination of any other type of food increases. This is especially true for Shigella with a small infectious dose of several hundred cells.
