When should the test be performed?
Liquid culture using Middlebrook 7H9 medium in the automated BACTEC MGIT system is employed for the isolation and identification of acid-fast bacilli, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is especially recommended in cases of:

  • Suspected pulmonary or extrapulmonary tuberculosis
  • Monitoring anti-tuberculosis treatment
  • Diagnosing tuberculosis in immunocompromised patients
  • Clinical situations where rapid culture results are needed

Test description
Culture in the BACTEC MGIT system using Middlebrook 7H9 medium allows for faster growth of mycobacteria compared to traditional solid media. The use of modern bacterial growth detection technology shortens diagnostic time and enables earlier initiation of appropriate treatment.

  • Suitable sample types include sputum, bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, body fluids, biopsies, and other clinical specimens suspected of infection
  • The automated BACTEC MGIT system provides continuous monitoring of bacterial growth under optimal conditions
  • Compared to classical methods, liquid culture can reduce the time to detection of mycobacteria to as little as 7–14 days
